Seal hunting is a huge part of Inuit culture, seals have sustained Inuit for thousands of years. Seal meat has been a source of nutritious food that has sustained life. Sealskin is a perfect material for clothing, it’s lightweight, waterproof and very warm, these are essential to life in the Arctic. The skins have also been used for many other things including tents. Seal oil lit the Qulliq to keep Inuit warm, it was also a source of light and a means to cook food. Seals have had many other impactful uses to the Inuit that we are extremely thankful for, after all without seals Inuit wouldn’t be here today.
Nicoletta realized the strong significance seals have to Inuit culture, this is why she’s passionate about working with it while creating beautiful works of art that celebrates her culture. Often times the sealskin used in Nicoletta‘s Art are from scraps of fur left behind after the majority of the pelt has been used for bigger items such as parkas, mitts, and boots. Not only are these small pieces of sealskin given a new life, sealskin is a natural material that is biodegradable, and all around Eco-friendly. It’s a sustainable way to wear fashionable earrings and jewellery all while supporting an indigenous artist. Another awesome plus side of sealskin is that its very lightweight making the earrings very comfortable to wear even if they are on the larger side! Nicoletta's sealskin work can be enjoyed by everyone!!
